Solar Way announces its intention to seek global partners for Solar Powered Charging Station (SPCS)

Innovative African Solar company launches Power Stix, the solar powered candle, at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona

BARCELONA — Solar Way, the designer and manufacturer of solar powered products for charging and lighting, today announced from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, its intention to seek global partners for its innovative Solar Powered Charging Station (SPCS). The SPCS provides a charging facility for multiple cell phones which can be installed for use in retail facilities such as shops and post offices or at cell phone company concessions. Because the SCPS uses solar power, rather than relying on grid electricity, it can be taken ‘on the road’ and Solar Way will seek to partner with entrepreneurs wishing to take the SPCS into communities to provide a cell phone charging service.

The SCPS provides a facility to charge 14 cell phones simultaneously. Offering a “phone locker” in which to deposit a phone securely whilst it charges, the SCPS will charge the customer’s cell phone for a small fee, depending on the amount of time the phone takes to charge. For those living without access to grid power, the SPCS will be a welcome facility as customers can currently go days (if not weeks) without being able to charge their cell phones and access their mobile services.

Commenting on the launch, Solar Way CEO, Marco Signorini said: “We’ve had a fantastic response to our innovative solar powered products which range from our solar lanterns, which are already selling in the hundreds of thousands, to our new products such as the SPCS. In order to bring the SCPS to the largest possible customer base, we are seeking to partner with mobile operators – particularly those with millions of customers off-grid – as well as retailers and other consumer outlets which have large footprints across Africa and other emerging markets.”

Solar Way also announced today the launch of the Power Stix, a solar powered candle which combines cheap, clean and safe lighting with the facility to charge a cell phone. As well as being safer than candles which cause thousands of house fires every year and cleaner than kerosene which causes dangerous indoor air pollution, the Power Stix is significantly cheaper, costing less than $20. The average African family living off-grid spends $12 every month on candles.

Signorini added: “The Power Stix is designed to support the widespread adoption of sustainable solar powered technologies for charging and lighting. Many of our customers have been using candles for lighting in their homes for generations and we believe the Power Stix provides an affordable alternative which will really support the transition to a cleaner, safer solar solution.”

MORRISTOWN, NJ–(Marketwire) – Ever wonder what it might be like to turn waste into energy, rather than sending it to an overflowing landfill? Well, users of iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices will now have the chance to find out through a fun and educational simulated game experience. Covanta Energy, a world leader in sustainable waste management and renewable energy, has launched The Crane Game, a new app that familiarizes users with the Energy-from-Waste (EfW) process by allowing them to turn average household waste into energy.

Throughout the game, players must operate a crane to transport waste from a holding pit into a chute leading to a combustion chamber. As each level is completed, waste deliveries come faster and faster and users must avoid obstacles like recyclables, electronics and other items that shouldn’t be combusted. Points are awarded for the total amount of energy generated, greenhouse gases mitigated and metals reclaimed for recycling. The game also shares interesting facts and figures about EfW and sustainable waste management to help raise awareness of vital landfill alternatives.

While most people are familiar with unsightly landfills, they are often unaware of the preferred alternative solution: Energy-from-Waste. After efforts to recycle as much as possible, EfW facilities offer a safe and technologically advanced means of waste disposal that generates clean, renewable energy, reduces greenhouse gases and supports recycling through the recovery of metals.

“At Covanta, we are always looking for new ways to tell our story and educate people on the alternatives to landfilling waste. After communities have reduced, reused and recycled to their fullest extent, the next, most responsible step is recover renewable energy from the remaining solid waste at EfW facilities,” said Paul Gilman, Covanta’s chief sustainability officer. “The Crane Game is a fun, interactive tool that demonstrates how our facilities safely recover energy from waste, minimize greenhouse gas emissions and recycle metal.”

The app is free to download and available exclusively for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices. To learn more or to download the app, please visit https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-crane-game-covanta/id596533589?mt=8.

CleanTECH San Diego and Mayor Jerry Sanders joined OneRoof Energy at a newly solarized home to announce the creation of 100-plus new green jobs.

OneRoof Energy is the first U.S. residential solar company to work directly with roofers to sell and install its systems. The nation’s demand for solar, rising sales and OneRoof Energy’s SolarSelect® Lease program, has led to the company’s extraordinary growth and local hiring opportunities. OneRoof Energy is looking to fill positions in sales, customer service, operations and other key departments this year.

Last year, OneRoof Energy received $50 million in financing to create the SolarSelect® Lease program. The simple lease program allows homeowners the ability to integrate solar into their roof with little to no upfront payment. Customers make a monthly lease payment for the system, which when combined with their new, lower electric bill, is lower than their existing bill without solar.

CleanTECH San Diego and Mayor Jerry Sanders praised OneRoof Energy’s contribution to San Diego’s position as a world leader in the clean technology industry and a leading green job provider.

OneRoof Energy CEO David Field (left) and Mayor Jerry Sanders (right) spoke about the hundreds of green jobs that OneRoof is hiring for as they stand in front of the Berghage family home, the first solar roof that the company leased and installed in San Diego. Photo OneRoof Energy.

“Not only does San Diego have the highest use of residential solar of any U.S. city, the region is also quickly becoming a North American hub for innovations in renewable energy,” said San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. “With programs like SolarSelect, we’ll continue to build our position as America’s top solar city.”

The Berghage family of Rancho Penasquitos was one of the first to take advantage of the lease program. Today’s press conference highlighted their new aesthetically pleasing solarized roof provided by OneRoof Energy. “When we learned how easy and simple it was to put solar on our roof with OneRoof Energy’s lease program, it was a no-brainer,” said Tom Berghage. “We will save thousands of dollars over the life of the lease and avoid annual electricity rate increases.”

The Berghage family home in San Diego with OneRoof rooftop solar panels. Options are traditional solar panels or seamlessly integrate solar into the roof, and also color match tile roofs. Photo OneRoof Energy.

“Installing a solar system when a homeowner is replacing their roof is the most cost-effective and efficient way to install solar, as exemplified by the Berghage home,” said OneRoof Energy CEO David Field. “Our dual warrantee covers both the roof and the production of the solar electric system, and the end result integrates nicely into the home design. This has been a huge factor in the rising product demand and growth of the company.”

CleanTECH San Diego applauded OneRoof Energy’s local influence as an innovative green technology company. The organization, created in partnership with Mayor Sanders, aims to stimulate innovation and advance the adoption of clean technologies in San Diego. OneRoof Energy CEO David Field has been involved with CleanTECH San Diego since its inception.

“OneRoof Energy offers a creative business model that will further accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar and stimulate job growth in our market,” said CleanTECH San Diego Executive Vice President Holly Smithson. “What’s exciting here is that OneRoof Energy’s offerings will now bring the pride of solar power generation to anyone with a roof over their head.”

About OneRoof Energy
OneRoof Energy’s mission is to provide simple, affordable solar solutions that people can trust. OneRoof Energy offers homeowners integrated, aesthetically pleasing solar solutions coupled with the peace of mind that comes with industry-leading warranties. Through OneRoof Energy’s SolarSelect Lease, homeowners can lease solar energy generation systems for as little as zero down. Strategic investors in the company include Hanwha International and Black Coral Capital.

About CleanTECH San Diego
CleanTECH San Diego is a private, non-profit member organization formed in 2007. As one of the nation’s premier cleantech cluster organizations, its mission is to position the region as a global leader in the cleantech economy. CleanTECH San Diego serves as a catalyst for a diverse group of stakeholders to advance a common agenda.

—–

OneRoof Energy Overview

OneRoof Energy is a San Diego-based company that develops, owns, and operates rooftop solar energy systems for residential homeowners.

OneRoof Energy believes the most efficient and cost-effective time to install a solar system is either when the roof is built for the first time or when it is rebuilt.

Unlike any other residential solar company in the U.S., OneRoof Energy works directly with builders and roofing contractors to combine roofing and solar installation into one seamless process. Homeowners can install solar easily and affordably with little to no upfront costs or ongoing maintenance expenses.

The company, launched in September 2011, received $50 million in financing to create the SolarSelect® Lease program. The simple lease program allows homeowners the ability to integrate solar into their roof with little to no upfront payment or high maintenance costs. Customers simply make a monthly lease payment for the system. Combined with their new, lower electric bill, the cost is typically lower than their existing bill without solar.

Utilizing several best-in-class solar technologies, homeowners not only have a cost-effective solar solution but they also can have the most aesthetically pleasing solar systems in the industry.

—–

SolarSelect® Lease Overview

OneRoof Energy’s SolarSelect® Lease allows customers access to solar rooftop power systems with little to nothing paid down. The lease immediately reduces monthly electric bills. Homeowners can also save thousands of dollars over the life of the lease as they avoid the typical annual electricity rate increases from their local utility.

Utility companies normally increase fees with each additional kilowatt of energy consumed. By replacing some of the home’s energy with solar energy, homeowners can reduce the amount of kilowatts bought from utility companies and pay lower monthly fees.

OneRoof Energy’s SolarSelect Lease gives homeowners flexible payment options to fit their budget. The lease eliminates large upfront and ongoing maintenance costs. Customers can choose to make a large down payment to reduce their monthly lease fee, or put little to nothing down with increased monthly payments, similar to a car lease. When combined, the monthly lease payment and the new electrical bill costs are typically lower than the electricity rates homeowners pay without solar energy.

Cost Savings

With utility rates continually on the rise, installing a solar energy system is a smart investment for homeowners. The following diagram illustrates how the SolarSelect Lease saves homeowners money each month by replacing some of the electricity bought from the utility company.

The chart below shows how the savings adds up over time with the SolarSelect Lease compared to relying totally on the utility company for power needs.

A home with solar power is more desirable and more valuable. A study by the Appraisal Institute calculated that home value increases approximately twenty dollars for every dollar reduction in annual electric bills. For instance, if a homeowner saves $300 off their annual utility bill, they could see a $6,000 increase in resale value.

The purpose of the SolarSelect Lease is to help homeowners create clean energy, spend less on their electric bills and put a little extra money in their pockets each month. Over time, those monthly savings can add up to thousands of dollars.

Wireless Shoppers Soon to Have Information on Device Materials, Energy Efficiency and Other Sustainability Attributes

People eager to check out the newest, fastest and coolest mobile handset devices will soon be able to learn about its environmental features too.

That’s because a new eco-rating system is planned for launch later this year by AT&T-, which developed the system in collaboration with BSR, a global business network and consultancy focused on sustainability. Consumers will find AT&T eco-ratings on simple, easy-to-read-and-understand labels appearing on AT&T-branded mobile devices, once they are implemented in a few months.

The new system, which sets an example for industry-wide sustainability efforts, is a direct response to customer wants and needs. According to a Deloitte study– on consumer trends in the purchase of sustainable products, 54 percent of surveyed shoppers consider sustainability to be one of their decision making factors.

AT&T’s eco-rating system will cover attributes such as: environmentally preferable materials, energy efficiency, responsible end-of-life treatment and environmentally-responsible manufacturing. In assigning ratings, device manufacturers will submit an assessment of each device to determine how many of 15 key criteria are met. These criteria cover everything from the percentage of recycled metals used in the device, to restriction of compounds such as lead, cadmium, mercury, nickel and antimony trioxide/antimony compounds. The overall rating represents the composite score of these environmental attributes.

AT&T plans to add the ratings icon to in-store collateral later this year. Consumers will also be able to visit a website to obtain detailed information about how AT&T and BSR devised the ratings, learn more about what makes up the overall sustainability scale for mobile devices and see available products.

AT&T plans to evolve the rating system as technological innovations, industry norms and sustainability needs change.

“Increasingly, consumers are mindful of a product’s impact on the environment. We are excited to work with leading third-party organizations like BSR and our suppliers to help make it easier for our customers to learn about the environmental impact of products they plan to purchase,” said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president, Devices, AT&T Mobility. “Our new eco-rating system will make it easier for our customers to make more informed purchasing decisions.”

“At BSR, we work hand-in-hand with companies looking to develop innovative business strategies to help create a more just and sustainable world,” said Vijay Kanal, BSR’s Director, Information and Communications Technology Practice. “This eco-rating system, which we worked with AT&T to develop, should not only have broad consumer impact, it should help accelerate the integration of sustainable business practices across the entire mobile device industry.”

AT&T is committed to integrating sustainable business practices across its business and was recently added to Corporate Responsibility Magazine’s 12th Annual 100 Best Corporate Citizens List. AT&T was also included in the 2011 Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI). The Coca-Cola Company released its eighth systemwide Sustainability Report, titled Reasons to Believe. In the Company’s effort to increase transparency across its broad sustainability platform, this year’s Report was created using stakeholder feedback and, for the first time, follows the disclosure and reporting requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) to achieve a self-declared grade level “B+.” With new digital tools available to more people, the report was also created in a unique format offering easier access from smart phones, tablets and other popular mobile devices. And, for the first time ever, its entire content is available exclusively online.

“Sustainability has been core to our business strategy for nearly 125 years”

“Sustainability has been core to our business strategy for nearly 125 years,” said Chief Sustainability Officer Beatriz Perez. “After receiving feedback from a variety of stakeholders, we decided to make some significant changes to our sustainability reporting efforts. In addition to increasing transparency within the content, we have taken a digital approach to make the report more user-friendly and accessible on a variety of mobile devices. As we continue to strengthen our sustainability efforts, we also will innovate the means by which we share our progress.”

The Coca-Cola Company reported against the GRI’s key performance indicators in the areas of economic, environmental and social performance and self-declared a B grade against the new GRI G3.1 guidelines. This year’s report also received verification by a third party agency, indicating the agency’s approval of tracking systems, resulting in an overall B+ grade. The 2010/2011 Sustainability Report provides an in-depth review on the sustainability efforts of the Company and its nearly 300 bottling partners. The four main areas of focus include water stewardship, energy efficiency and climate protection, sustainable packaging and healthy communities. See the 2010/2011 Coca-Cola Company Sustainability Report at thecoca-colacompany.com/sustainabilityreport.

Performance highlights from the 2010/2011 Sustainability Report include:

Our PlantBottle™ technology, which allows us to replace 100 percent petroleum-based PET plastic with PET plastic that contains up to 30 percent material derived from plants, is becoming more widely used around the world. In 2010, we distributed 2.5 billion PlantBottle™ packages in 10 major markets, saving more than 60,000 barrels of oil and sequestering the equivalent of nearly 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from our PET plastic bottles. By the end of 2011, PlantBottle™ packaging was available in 20 markets, and nearly 10 billion PlantBottle™ packages had been shipped.

In 2010, we improved our water use efficiency for the eighth consecutive year, reducing the average amount of water required to produce each beverage serving. As of the end of 2010, we had achieved 93 percent alignment, and by the end of 2011 we estimate 96 percent alignment with our stringent standards.

Also in 2010, our system increased production volume while reducing global carbon emissions by 2 percent, putting us a step closer to our goal of growing our business but not our carbon footprint. We also exceeded our goal of installing 150,000 hydrofluorocarbon (HFC)-free coolers in 2010, for a cumulative total of 277,000 such units by the end of that year. Additionally, we increased that total to 500,000 by the end of 2011.

We exceeded our goal to give back at least 1 percent of our operating income to communities worldwide through The Coca-Cola Company and The Coca-Cola Foundation in 2010 by giving $102 million.

We began to gain real traction with our new 5 BY 20 initiative to empower 5 million women entrepreneurs by 2020. Furthermore, we continued our commitment to promoting agricultural practices that are better for both farmers and the environment, through projects such as Haiti Hope and Project Nurture.

We continued working to make The Coca-Cola Company—and our entire system—a great place to work, starting with an unwavering commitment to workplace and human rights. We increased the number of women in system leadership roles, going from 23 percent in 2008 to just over 27 percent in 2010.

Since 2000, our average calories per serving decreased by 9 percent globally. We have more than 800 low- and no-calorie beverages—nearly 25 percent of our global portfolio. We committed to include calorie information on the front of nearly all our packages by the end of 2011 and have a physical activity program in 100 countries toward our goal to have one in every country in which we operate by 2015.

Southwest Airlines introduced a new sleek cabin experience to enhance Customer comfort, improve fleet efficiency, and give back to the environment. Dubbed Evolve: The New Spirit Experience, the cabin update utilizes durable and environmentally responsible products to reduce waste and create weight savings onboard the aircraft, while enhancing comfort for Customers. Inspired by Southwest’s past with a nod to the airline’s future, the cabin refresh features recyclable carpet, a brighter color-scheme, and a more durable, eco-friendly, and comfortable low-profile seat that weighs less. The new design also provides the unique opportunity of greater revenue potential by increasing the number of seats onboard from 137 to 143, without sacrificing Customer comfort and personal space and increasing under-seat room for carryon luggage.

Southwest’s cabin refresh has been four years in the making, beginning with a partnership between Southwest’s Maintenance & Engineering and Marketing Teams to improve the Customer Experience while increasing sustainability but not adding costs. In 2009, Southwest launched the “Green Plane” to test the market’s latest sustainable products onboard an aircraft. Based on the inflight test results and feedback from Customers onboard the Green Plane, Southwest’s new Evolve interior features the e-Leather seat cover and all of the other products tested on the Green Plane including the carpet, life vest pouch, foam fill, and passenger seat rub strips.

“We are preparing now for our next 40 years of success with a fleet modernization plan that includes the new interior, the Boeing 737-800 which will come online beginning in March this year, and the 737 MAX, which will join the Southwest fleet in 2017,” said Bob Jordan, Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer. “The evolutionary changes we’re making with the new interior uphold our low-cost roots and historic focus on Customer Service. The cabin upgrade also allows us to create revenue opportunities without adding unwanted fees.”

Southwest will begin retrofitting its current fleet of 372 -700s with Evolve: The New Spirit Experience in March 2012, anticipating completion in 2013. As integration of AirTran moves forward, the Boeing -700s and -717s will also be retrofitted with the new cabin interior as those aircraft are converted into the Southwest brand over the next several years. Other Southwest fleet types are still being evaluated for a possible retrofit.

The Evolution of the New Cabin Interior Improves Customer Experience and Preserves Personal Space
With a continued focus on Customer comfort, Evolve: The New Spirit Experience retrofit enhances the Customer Experience:
Modern Cabin Design: The new design incorporates natural, earthy tones combined with Southwest’s iconic Canyon blue and clean, aluminum accents for a more modern, fresh appeal. The redesign is inspired by Southwest’s past with a nod to the future.
Lighter and More Comfortable Seat: The redesigned low-profile seat is more durable, made of eco-friendly products, is lighter, and more comfortable. Based on Customer feedback during our Green Plane test, people rated the low-profile seat more comfortable and a better overall experience than our current seat offering.
Increased Under-Seat Space: The new design allows for more under-seat room for carry-on luggage and approved pet carriers.
Customer Living Space: Reducing the recline from three inches to two inches preserves living space while allowing for seat adjustment to improve Customer comfort.
Seatback pockets: The new netted seatback pockets are streamlined to provide more shin clearance.
Headrest: The fixed-wing headrest provides better neck and head alignment with side-to-side support for sleeping.
Improved Ergonomics: The combination of the low-profile cushion and fixed wing headrest improves ergonomics by positioning Customers “down and back” into the seat, allowing for better lumbar support, armrest alignment, and increased personal living space.

Southwest Introduces New Era of Cabin Sustainability
Over the decades, Southwest has been at the forefront of such efficiencies as paperless tickets, quick aircraft turnarounds, installation of winglets, and, more recently, the installation of fleet-wide advanced avionics. For more than 40 years, Southwest has been a Maverick in the airline industry, and the refreshed design is charting a new course for sustainable cabin interiors. The new cabin interior features these sustainable products:
Seats: The new seats are constructed using eco-friendly products that offer more than twice the durability than the current seat. A lighter weight fill from Franklin Products in the back of the seat provides increased customer comfort, as well as a weight savings of nearly two pounds per seat. The improved durability of the redesigned seat coupled with fuel savings from less weight is expected to result in more than $10 million in ongoing annual cost savings.
Seat Cover: The new seats are made using e-Leather, manufactured by Irvin Automotive of Pontiac, MI, an eco-friendly, lightweight, and scuff resistant alternative to traditional leather. e-Leather is made from 83 percent natural leather that is upgraded utilizing eco-friendly technology.
Seat Frame: In our mission to improve the Customer Experience yet increase sustainability and contain costs, we will preserve the interior foundation as part of the redesign by using the existing seat frame on 372 of our existing -700 fleet (excluding AirTran’s -700s). This will equate to a savings in excess of $50 million in the anticipated cost of refreshing the cabin.
Carpet: The new interior carpet is produced by InterfaceFLOR and will be applied in carpet squares, thus eliminating the need for total replacement of individual areas and reducing labor and material costs. The carpet is recyclable and the manufacturing process is dedicated to being completely carbon neutral.

Life Vest Pouch: The new pouch containing the life vest is more environmentally friendly, offering a weight savings of one pound per seat. The smaller pouch also creates more room under the seat for carry-on items.
Wind Screen: The new bulkhead product has a longer lifespan, thus reducing the labor costs and waste that result from more frequent replacements or repairs.
Durable Recyclable aluminum: By switching from plastic to a recyclable aluminum, we are increasing durability and reducing waste on the rub strips, tray table latches, and seat arm trim pieces.

Evolve: The New Spirit Experience is a win for each aspect of the triple bottomline: Performance, for increased durability, improved fuel burn, and additional revenue opportunity; People, with a new interior that emphasizes comfort and personal space; and Planet, for featuring sustainable, recyclable materials.

Southwest Airlines continues to differentiate itself from other low-fare carriers—offering a reliable product with exemplary Customer Service. Southwest Airlines is the nation’s largest carrier in terms of originating domestic passengers boarded and has recently acquired AirTran Airways, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Southwest Airlines Co. Southwest serves 72 cities in 37 states and is one of the most honored airlines in the world known for its commitment to the triple bottom line of Performance, People, and Planet. To read more about how Southwest is doing its part to be a good citizen, visit southwest.com/citizenship to read the Southwest Airlines One Report™ . Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than 3,000 flights a day and has more than 35,000 Employees systemwide.

• Highest rated city fuel economy of any vehicle without a plug.
• Introduces proven hybrid powertrain at MSRP below $19,000.
• Wide array of available convenience and premium technology.

Following the U.S. debut of the all-new 2012 Prius c at the 2012 North American International Auto Show here, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., plans to bring this dynamically styled, five-door hatchback to market in March of 2012, and introduce Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive to the subcompact segment.

The letter “c” represents “city” in the Prius c name. Designed to function as an urban-friendly vehicle with an engaging driving experience, hatchback utility, and a city fuel economy rating of 53 mpg, Prius c offers the highest city mpg rating of any vehicle without a plug. The all-new Prius c joins the Prius Family, which includes the third generation Prius Liftback, the versatile new Prius v and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, which will debut in early 2012.

Beginning with the first generation fourteen years ago, over two million Prius units have been sold worldwide. Prius remains the world’s premier eco-vehicle brand, and has made great strides establishing consumer trust in hybrid technology. With Prius c, Toyota will make the market’s most proven hybrid technology available to subcompact car shoppers with a starting MSRP below $19,000.

Unique Place in the Prius Family
A gateway product into the Prius Family, the new Prius c will find favor with younger shoppers seeking a smartly designed, fuel-efficient subcompact car packing advanced drivetrain and in-car technology. The Prius c will offer engaging driving dynamics with superior urban maneuverability. When the 2012 Prius c arrives in showrooms this spring, the all-new hatchback will offer:

- The highest rated city fuel economy estimate of any vehicle without a plug*; 53 mpg in the city, and 46 mpg on the highway, for a combined rating of 50 mpg
– The most accessible Prius will feature a starting MSRP below $19,000 with proven hybrid powertrain and premium technology
– A premium subcompact car experience thanks to a wide array of available convenience and advanced in-car electronics features, including a standard 3.5-in. full color TFT multi-information display, hands-free phone capability, USB port with iPod® connectivity, and available Display Audio system with Navigation and Entune™

The scale of the all-new Prius c becomes apparent when compared to the familiar proportions of the midsize Prius Liftback. The Prius c is smaller and lighter than its midsize Prius stable mate with 19.1 inches less length (157.3 vs. 176.4 inches OAL) and 542 lbs. less weight than the Prius Liftback (2,500 vs. 3,042 lbs.). In adapting the Hybrid Synergy Drive to the smaller Prius c platform, each of the system’s major components were re-designed to reduce weight, scale, and improve efficiency.

Four Grades with Generous Standard Equipment
The Prius c will be available in four trim levels offering desirable features, equipment, and enhanced capability giving consumers a compelling value proposition. Prius c provides many standard features such as automatic climate control, tilt-telescopic steering wheel with audio, climate, Multi-Information Display and Bluetooth® hands-free controls, and remote keyless entry with illuminated entry among a long list of standard equipment.

Efficient Packaging
The Prius c’s effective packaging design strategically locates key drivetrain components within the chassis to help optimize interior space and handling. The compact gasoline engine, transaxle and power-control unit are optimally placed within the vehicle to help enhance weight distribution and lower the center of gravity. In addition, the hybrid battery and fuel tank are positioned together beneath the rear seat, ideally distributing their mass within the wheelbase to improve weight distribution to help enhance handling. By locating the battery and fuel tank below the rear seat, the Prius c is able to offer 104 cu. ft. of interior volume (87.4 cu. ft. passenger volume, 17.1 cu. ft. cargo volume).

Prius c Hybrid Synergy Drive Propulsion
The Prius c’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system integrates the operation of components that include a gasoline engine, an electric motor within a Continuously Variable Transaxle, a nickel-metal hydride battery, a power control unit (inverter), a DC-DC converter, a step-up converter and a hybrid control computer. The hybrid control computer governs the seamless application of gasoline engine and electric power depending on driving demands and selected drive mode.

The Prius c relies on a SULEV (Tier 2 Bin 3) rated 1.5-liter in-line, four-cylinder gasoline engine that utilizes an Atkinson cycle to increase efficiency. This engine produces 73 horsepower and 82 lb.-ft. of torque, contributing to a total hybrid system output of 99 hp.

The Prius c’s hybrid system utilizes a 144-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack that has been located under the rear passenger seat, near the center of the vehicle, and low in the chassis to help improve the center of gravity.

Prius c offers three distinct drive modes: Normal, Eco, and EV mode. Eco mode reduces overall energy consumption by governing climate control and throttle to improve vehicle efficiency. Under certain conditions, the EV mode allows the Prius c to be driven solely by electric power for a short distance (under 1 mile) while remaining below 25 mph.

Vehicle Structure – Improved Handling and Safety
The Prius c’s body structure makes extensive use of lightweight, high-strength steel to help reduce vehicle mass and improve fuel economy. The strategic use of high-tensile-strength steel contributes to the vehicle’s ability to absorb and disperse impact energies helping enhance occupant safety. The high level of torsional rigidity afforded by the Prius c body structure allows the suspension to be more optimally tuned for ride and handling.

Suspension and Steering for Enhanced Handling
The front suspension uses a Macpherson strut design, and the rear rides on a tuned torsion beam. The coil-spring and shock-absorber characteristics of the Prius c have been tuned to enhance handling, flat turning, and smooth ride comfort. Prius c is available with 15- or 16-inch wheel-and-tire combinations. The 15-inch wheels are available in steel with wheel cover for base model or in aluminum alloy for elevated trim levels. Prius c models equipped with the available 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels enjoy enhanced handling thanks to a faster steering ratio (2.28 turns lock to lock), which helps quicken the vehicle’s dynamic response.

Youthful Exterior and Interior Design
The Prius c exterior design helps project a fun, youthful attitude for this all-new addition to the Prius family, while offering excellent aerodynamic performance. Extensive aerodynamic features were engineered into the Prius c to help achieve a 0.28 coefficient of drag. Adding character to this subcompact, the Prius c’s lower-body styling is wider below the beltline, featuring sculpted rear flares to help express a sturdy, athletic stance that communicates a more agile driving experience.

The Prius c’s available exterior colors include vibrant hues that are unique and expressive. The available colors for Prius c include three new colors – Habanero, Moonglow, and Summer Rain Metallic – along with Blue Streak Metallic, Absolutely Red, Black Sand Pearl, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Classic Silver Metallic, and Super White.

The Prius c interior design seeks to create a space that is futuristic yet passenger friendly. Using black as a basic interior color, the door trim, seat surfaces, and instrument panel feature treatments in lighter colors to help create contrast.

Display Audio and Connectivity with Entune®
The 2012 Prius c will offer three audio system configurations. A base audio system features either four or six speakers, depending on the model, and includes AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability, auxiliary audio jack, USB port with iPod® connectivity, hands-free phone capability, phone book access, and music streaming via Bluetooth® wireless technology.

The Display Audio with Navigation and Entune™ has six speakers and augments capability with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio capability (with 3-month trial subscription to XM Select package), HD Radio™ with iTunes® tagging, and advanced voice recognition. Toyota’s Entune™ multi-media system functions through select smart phones’ interface that brings applications such as Bing and Pandora® to the vehicle audio display. It also features real time information such as traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports, and stocks.

Standard Safety Features
The Prius c is equipped with nine airbags strategically located to help protect the driver and passengers in the event of certain types of accidents. The new 2012 Prius c, like all Toyota models, is equipped with the standard Star Safety System™, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST).

* 2012 EPA 53/46/50 city/highway/combined mpg estimates. Actual mileage will vary.

TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 14, 2011 – Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. today announced that the new 2012 Camry Hybrid is arriving at Toyota dealerships across the nation. This all-new Camry Hybrid sets a new standard for efficiency, refinement and value in the mid-size hybrid sedan category.

The 2012 Camry Hybrid features an updated version of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain that helps propel the Hybrid LE model to EPA MPG Ratings of 43 city/39 highway and a class-leading 41 mpg combined. The revised hybrid-electric powertrain, which features a newly-developed 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, also includes measures that improve electric motor-voltage control, optimize regenerative braking, and reduce parasitic losses in the transaxle. By combining the efficiency of the new hybrid-electric powertrain with reduced vehicle weight and improved aerodynamics, Toyota engineers eclipsed the efficiency of all currently available mid-size hybrid-electric sedans with the all-new Camry Hybrid.

New to the 2012 Camry Hybrid model, is an efficient EV mode that allows the driver to operate the car using the electric motor alone under certain conditions for up to one mile at speeds below 25 mph. As with the previous Camry Hybrid, the new vehicle is equipped with an ECO mode, which optimizes throttle response and air-conditioning output to help maximize fuel economy.

The new Camry Hybrid’s strengthened body structure increases the vehicle’s rigidity to help improve handling, steering, ride quality and occupant safety. The Camry’s body structure is designed to help absorb collision-impact forces and help minimize impact deformation to the passenger cabin. High-strength steel is used for B-pillar and rocker-panel reinforcements to help manage overall body deformation in the event of certain side collisions.

The new available Blind Spot Monitor uses sub-millimeter wave radar to detect vehicles in the driver’s blind spots. When the system detects a vehicle in the adjacent lane, it alerts the driver using indicators on the side mirrors. If the turn signal is on when there is a vehicle in the blind spot of the driver’s intended lane, the indicator on the corresponding mirror will flash.

Advancing the safety mission, the Camry Hybrid is also standard equipped with the Star Safety System™ that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), and Smart Stop Technology (SST).

The 2012 Camry achieves amazingly low interior noise levels in its passenger cabin, which now offers enhanced refinement and capability. To reduce noise throughout the vehicle’s interior, sound absorbing materials were strategically positioned to help control the penetrating wind and road noise that have become more apparent as drivetrains become quieter. Engineers were particularly keen on suppressing the noises that are near the frequency of human speech to help create a more comfortable environment for conversation, and the enjoyment of the new Camry’s in-car electronics. Acoustic glass, stronger door and rocker area seals, and the application sound insulating foam in the roof, pillars, and door openings are among the noise countermeasures employed by engineers on the 2012 Camry Hybrid.

A quiet, smooth, and refined ride quality are elements that help contribute to the enjoyment of the state-of-the-art connectivity features that are available on the 2012 Camry Hybrid. Standard features include hands free phone capability, and a USB port that allows enjoyment of music from portable devices. Toyota Entune™, Toyota’s innovative new multimedia system is also available on the new Camry Hybrid. This system leverages a compatible mobile smartphone to provide fully integrated access to entertainment and information services. Toyota Entune™ engages mobile apps such as Bing™, OpenTable®, and movietickets.com along with live weather, traffic, stocks, and sports in addition to integrating music options such as iHeartRadio’s 750+ stations and Pandora® internet radio’s personalized music service. The Entune™ multimedia system can be managed by a voice recognition system that helps the driver stay focused on the road.

The 2012 Camry Hybrid is available in LE and XLE grades, and both hybrid models are available at a significantly lower MSRP than their 2011 predecessors while delivering the best MPG of any mid-size sedan. The 2012 Camry Hybrid LE starts at $25,900 which is a $1,150 decrease from the 2011 model.

The Camry Hybrid LE includes 10 airbags, projector beam headlamps, dual-zone auto A/C, Smart Key System with push button start, steering wheel with audio and Blue Logic® controls, metallic tech-grained interior trim and tone-on-tone fabric seats among its list of standard equipment.

The Camry Hybrid XLE is priced at $27,400, which is an $800 decrease from a similarly equipped 2011 Camry Hybrid model despite adding the all-new Display Audio with 6.1” touch-screen with Navigation, phone book access, and music streaming with Bluetooth® wireless technology, 17 inch alloy wheels and chrome-surround fog lamps. Upgrades available for the Camry Hybrid XLE model include Premium HDD Navigation with Entune™ and JBL® Greenedge premium sound which includes a 7-inch touch-screen offering split screen functionality, Leather-trimmed Ultrasuede® seats with heated and passenger seats, Safety Connect®, Blind Spot Monitor, and a Convenience Package that includes Integrated Backup Camera, HomeLink® Universal Transceiver, and Anti-Theft System with Alarm among other desirable optional features.

Kyocera Solar, Inc. and the Associated Students of San Diego State University (SDSU) announced today the completion of a 355.9 kilowatt (kW) solar photovoltaic energy system on the school’s campus, part of a student-approved plan to build a new LEED Platinum student union building. An inaugural ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Tuesday, October 11 at 10:00am.

In an effort that brought together San Diego-area partners, the construction was completed by Independent Energy Solutions, Inc. of Vista, Calif., using 1,680 Kyocera KD240 solar modules produced at Kyocera’s San Diego manufacturing facility. Mounted on a carport structure on a campus parking building, Independent Energy Solutions designed the system to resist wind uplift and to mitigate seismic concerns, providing added assurance for long-term efficiency and adaptability. The utility-tied system has an expected yearly power production of 583,267 kilowatt hours (kWh) — enough energy to power almost 100 area homes each year.

The Associated Students of San Diego State University, a student-directed corporation, funded the system. Financing came as a result of a 2008 student-approved fee referendum directing a portion of funds to promote sustainability initiatives, including educational programs and facility upgrades. Funding was aided in part by a California Solar Initiative Performance Based Incentive, a program that focuses on how much electricity the system produces over five years.

SDSU views sustainability as a long-term plan — the university is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education and began offering a Sustainability and Environmental Studies major in 2009. “Creating a sustainable campus and community is a priority for SDSU faculty, students and staff,” stated Morgan Chan, Associated Students’ Sustainability Commissioner. “Students at SDSU are each making an investment in their own future, but recognize the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy benefiting future Aztec generations.” SDSU’s array contributes to the total of over 11 megawatts of photovoltaic energy installed at California State University (CSU) campuses throughout the state. CSU’s growing renewable energy portfolio is a cornerstone of its commitment to energy independence and providing a sustainable campus environment for students.

Kyocera, with a 37-year history of environmental preservation and solar innovation, is recognized as a global leader in the solar industry for its high-performance modules, as evidenced by its repeated record-breaking cell efficiencies and its distinction of producing the world’s first modules to have passed the Long-Term Sequential Test performed by TUV Rheinland Japan Ltd. As part of its commitment to offer quality solar modules that meet the growing demand for U.S.-made products, Kyocera has developed a manufacturing presence in San Diego. “Projects such as this exemplify the need for high-quality, efficient solar modules available from U.S.-based manufacturers,” said Steve Hill, president of Kyocera Solar, Inc. “This installation proved to be a successful and rewarding venture as we were able to unite partners that live and work in the San Diego community.”

Demonstration facility, backed by a $25 million U.S. Department of Energy award, will showcase biomass to fuel technology and provide new “green” jobs for Hawaii

UOP LLC, a Honeywell company, announced today that it has begun construction in Hawaii of a biofuels demonstration unit that will convert forest residuals, algae and other cellulosic biomass into green transportation fuels.

Backed by a $25 million U.S. Department of Energy award, the Honeywell UOP Integrated Biorefinery will upgrade biomass into high-quality renewable gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. The project is part of the DOE’s efforts to help spur the creation of the domestic biofuel industry, drive domestic job creation and reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. The project will also support the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative goal to achieve 70 percent clean energy by the year 2030.

Located at the Tesoro Corp. refinery in Kapolei, the Integrated Biorefinery will be used to demonstrate viability of the technology, test the fuels produced and evaluate the environmental footprint of the fuels and the process technology. The project, which will generate more than 80 new jobs during construction, is scheduled to begin initial production in 2012. It is expected to be fully operational by 2014.

“Biomass is abundantly available today, and it is an important opportunity to consider as we seek alternatives that will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and improve our environmental footprint,” said Jim Rekoske, vice president and general manager of Renewable Energy and Chemicals for Honeywell’s UOP. “Our Integrated Biorefinery will illustrate these benefits as well the potential that biorefineries have to enhance the local economy and provide new green jobs.”

“Our island home is far too dependent on imported fossil fuels, and I am very pleased that this alternative energy initiative has the support of the federal government. Hawaii will play a critical role in helping the domestic biofuel industry thrive and this project will create much needed jobs in Kapolei,” said Senator Daniel K. Inouye. “I am also pleased that Honeywell’s UOP is partnering with a number of local stakeholders including Hawaii BioEnergy, Group 70, Kai Hawaii, University of Hawaii and Leeward Community College. I will do all I can to ensure that Hawaii continues to serve as the laboratory for renewable energy initiatives in the Pacific.”

Once successfully proven in this demonstration unit, a commercial-scale facility using the same technology could produce as much as 50 million gallons of drop-in green transportation fuels per year and could create as many as 800 new construction jobs and 1,000 new jobs in biomass production and refinery operations, Rekoske said.

The demonstration unit will utilize the RTP® rapid thermal processing technology to rapidly convert biomass into a pourable, liquid biofuel. This liquid biofuel will then be upgraded to green transportation fuels using hydroprocessing technology from Honeywell’s UOP.

Honeywell’s UOP, the recognized leader in developing process technology for the refining, petrochemical and natural gas industries, offers technologies that convert natural oils and plant biomass to valuable fuels. Since launching its efforts in renewable energy and chemicals in 2007, the company has commercialized the UOP/Eni Ecofining(TM) technology for the production of Honeywell Green Diesel(TM) and the UOP Renewable Jet process for the production of Honeywell Green Jet Fuel(TM). In 2008, UOP partnered with Ensyn Corp. to form a joint venture business, Envergent Technologies LLC, to offer RTP technology and equipment.

UOP LLC, headquartered in Des Plaines, Illinois, USA, is a leading international supplier and licensor of process technology, catalysts, adsorbents, process plants, and consulting services to the petroleum refining, petrochemical, and gas processing industries. UOP is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc. and is part of Honeywell’s Specialty Materials strategic business group. For more information, go to www.uop.com .

Honeywell International Inc. ( www.honeywell.com ) is a Fortune 100 diversified technology and manufacturing leader, serving customers worldwide with aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings, homes and industry; automotive products; turbochargers; and specialty materials. Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) announced the release of its 2010-11 Sustainability Report, which focuses on the Company’s efforts to build cleaner products and reduce the size of its own environmental footprint.

In addition, the Company has updated its Sustainability Web site with all new stories on everything from Cummins’ environmental and community involvement efforts to its plans for growth in Africa and its initiatives to develop the next generation of Company leaders. The site includes videos on a variety of sustainability topics.

In keeping with the Company’s international growth, this year’s report is the most global Cummins has produced. The report includes stories on initiatives in Africa, Brazil, China, India, the United States and Australia as well as additional content and photos from the United Kingdom, Mexico and Romania. This year’s report devotes almost twice-as-much coverage to the Company’s environmental initiatives compared to last year, including Cummins’ successful effort to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 28 percent between 2006 and 2010 as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders Program.

The 2010-11 report’s cover story is about Cummins ReCon business and the high-tech ways it keeps parts and engines out of landfills and on the road longer. Other stories explore Cummins China’s efforts to help that country reach its environmental goals, the growing interest in the Company’s natural gas powered engines and generator systems and the increasing number of buildings at Cummins with “green” features.

The report highlights a number of community involvement initiatives by Cummins employees, including:

The many efforts by Cummins Brazil to help its neighbors in Guarulhos.

Multiple initiatives to bring power to remote villages around the world.

A project to clean one of China’s largest freshwater lakes.

As part of the Company’s 2nd annual Environmental Challenge, Cummins employees tackled projects ranging from feeding the hungry in Minneapolis through straw bale gardening to building an outdoor classroom for students in Stamford in the United Kingdom, to working with children who have hearing and speaking disabilities in Craiova, Romania.

Cummins has a broad definition of sustainability, including not only environmental responsibility and community involvement but also governance, risk management, leadership development and financial success.

That approach is reflected in the broad array of stories included in the Sustainability Report. However, to minimize the report’s environmental footprint, the Company prints a limited number of reports. Anyone interested in the report is urged to first go to the Web site where they will also find videos and other features on Cummins’ sustainability story.

The LE model also includes remote keyless entry, auto on/off headlamps, side rocker panels with chrome inserts, steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth controls, and variable intermittent wipers.

Camry Hybrid Offers More Power and Class-Leading MPG
The Camry Hybrid model is reinvented for 2012, utilizing a highly revised Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain that includes a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces a combined 200 horsepower and offers better MPG, all while featuring a significantly lower MSRP than its predecessor.

The Camry Hybrid LE not only delivers the best MPG of any mid-size sedan, achieving manufacturer-estimated 43 city/39 mpg hwy/41mpg combined, but it will also carry a MSRP of $25,900, an impressive decrease of $1,150 compared to the 2011 model. The premium Camry Hybrid XLE model features a MSRP of $27,400, a decrease of $800 compared to the previous model with upgrade package.

Gap Inc. (NYSE:GPS) today released its fifth Social and Environmental Responsibility report, a comprehensive update on its supply chain operations, environmental programs and community investment efforts from 2009 to 2010.

“Gap Inc. takes seriously the importance of being a responsible company,” Gap Inc. Chairman and CEO Glenn Murphy said today. “For nearly 20 years, we’ve worked to address some of the major challenges facing our industry and to operate our business in line with our value to do what’s right. While we’re not perfect, we’re proud of the progress made.”

“To achieve lasting change, we need all apparel brands to commit to making ongoing improvements in the lives of garment workers and to the environment,” Murphy added.

Reducing the environmental impact of the company’s operations remains a top priority in the years ahead. Gap Inc. reported that 100 percent of its branded denim is made in compliance with the company’s Water Quality System, ensuring the wastewater from the laundries is properly treated before being discharged. In this report, the company also committed to reducing the absolute greenhouse gas emissions from its operations in the United States by 20 percent by 2015, when compared to 2008 levels. This follows an earlier 20 percent decrease in greenhouse gas emissions from 2003 to 2008.

Another program highlighted in the report – Gap Inc.’s P.A.C.E. program (Personal Advancement and Career Enhancement) – has helped more than 5,000 female factory workers gain life and work skills education, that benefit them both at home and at work. This award-winning, proprietary program is now in place in Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. The program will be expanded to Bangladesh later this year.

Accomplishments detailed in the 160-page, bi-annual report:

– Introduction of a Human Rights Policy that strengthens our existing global Codes of Vendor and Business Conduct to help ensure that the more than one million workers in over 1,200 factories that manufacture our branded products are treated fairly and with respect.

– Employees at the company’s Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy stores doubled their volunteer efforts in 2010 over the previous year, contributing to the company’s more than 428,000 hours of volunteer time, bringing total donations of time and money to more than $16 million.

– More space efficient containers and redesigned packaging eliminated 57,000 tons of cardboard and 63 million yards of plastic bands per year from our U.S. operations, for a cost savings of approximately $20 million a year.

– Reduced electricity consumption in our Distribution Centers by 40 percent by replacing more than 16,000 light bulbs with more energy efficient lights.

“From our factory auditing approach to environmental efforts, we hope that this online report is an informative and transparent view into our evolving work,” said Kindley Walsh Lawlor, vice president, Social and Environmental Responsibility, Gap Inc. “We continually challenge ourselves to define what being a responsible company means, and to translate our definition into action.”

Already a Leader in Offering Environmentally and Socially Responsible Products, Domtar Will Increase Its Annual Sales of FSC-Certified Paper by More Than 150,000 Tons

Marking a new milestone in environmental responsibility, Domtar Corporation (NYSE: UFS) (TSX: UFS) announced today a broad expansion of its paper products that are certified to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC®).

Beginning today, Domtar’s EarthChoice® product line – the broadest collection of environmentally and socially responsible papers available – will now include specialty products used for bandage wraps, popcorn bags, candy wrappers, sugar pouches, hamburger wrap and a wide range of other everyday applications. Domtar produces these specialty papers at mills in Espanola, Ontario; Port Huron, Michigan; and Rothschild and Nekoosa, Wisconsin, all of which are certified to FSC standards by the Rainforest Alliance.

Domtar also announced today that all production of its Domtar Tradebook paper will now be FSC-certified and renamed EarthChoice® Tradebook. The product, specifically designed for book publishers who are committed to sustainability and providing an environmentally responsible choice, had previously been FSC-certified only on request.

As a result of this expansion, Domtar will annually sell more than 150,000 additional tons of FSC-certified paper.

“We have worked with Domtar for over a decade now,” said Tensie Whelan, president of the Rainforest Alliance, whose SmartWood program audits forests and companies to FSC standards. “With these new FSC-certified products, Domtar continues to move the industry forward when it comes to environmental responsibility.”

FSC certification ensures that forests are managed in a way that protects nature and the people who live and work there. Auditors perform a thorough assessment, checking a range of criteria such as:

The steps taken to protect soil and water;
Safeguards that provide protection to fish and wildlife; and
Whether the number of trees harvested is less than the number that either regrow naturally or get planted.

The announcements mark the latest steps by Domtar, a long-time promoter of FSC certification, to demonstrate its environmental leadership. In June, for instance, Domtar launched an online tool called the “Paper Trail,” providing unmatched transparency among today’s industry calculators. The tool allows customers to view the environmental impacts of specific paper grades, helping businesses and consumers measure their impact on the environment whilst providing guidance in their choice of paper product.

“In 2009, we were proud to be the first company to sell one million tons of FSC-certified EarthChoice paper, and we’re excited that today, we can expand that line even further to include specialty products and book papers,” said Lewis Fix, Domtar Vice-President of Sustainable Business and Brand Management. “This is going to help provide more ways for our customers to put their commitment to sustainability on paper. After all, we’re more than just a paper company, we’re the Sustainable Paper Company.”

Leading European carpet manufacturer Desso has supplied ecological carpet to an innovative project which has been declared the most sustainable office building in the Netherlands for 2011 – with the company also earning a “trendsetter” accolade in a new book.

Regeneration of the Bussumse Watertoren was completed last year, bringing back into productive life a water tower dating back to the 1880s but which had ceased operation in 1990, and which now incorporates three floors comprising 4400 sq metres of office space.

Forty buildings were submitted for the competition, a joint initiative between a Dutch radio station and the country’s leading engineering trade journal, with the winning Bussumse Watertoren being declared a building which acts “as a clear example for the commercial market’.

The project has an Environmental Building Index (MIG) of 900 points out of 1000, is CO2 neutral, employs geothermal heat storage, its own wind and solar electricity, and natural water capture.

The developers’ commitment to sustainability extended to the building’s interior, with Desso being specified to supply 2000 sq metres of Cradle to Cradle® Silver Certified carpet tiles, incorporating the company’s highly innovative EcoBase® carpet tile backing.

EcoBase® was specifically designed for ease of disassembly, and carpet tiles that incorporate this eco-effective backing can be entirely recycled within Desso’s own production process – making it the ideal carpeting choice for this ecologically advanced project.

Cradle to Cradle® design requires that products are made from pure materials that are safe for human use and can be either biologically or technically recycled at the end of their useful life, with carpets made from nutrients that can be reused in a continuous technical cycle.

The company’s commitment to Cradle to Cradle® sustainability was the reason Desso developed its new EcoBase® backing, which has enabled it to achieve the world’s first Cradle to Cradle® Silver certification for an entire carpet tile product.

That commitment to eco-efficiency has won Desso the accolade of being among the top businesses to watch, according to Dutch trend watcher Hilde Roothart. In her book, ‘MOOD11’, she identifies the top trends of the current year, including the global problem of too much waste and pollution – with Desso’s Cradle to Cradle® strategy cited in the book as a working demonstration of environmental responsibility.*

Desso has also implemented a Take BackTM system to ensure that carpet recycling actually takes place; and can now collect old, used EcoBase® carpet at the end of its useful life and recyle it into new carpet, utilising its Refinity® process that enables the yarn and other fibres to be separated from the backing and which can then each be recycled.

Alexander Collot d’Escury, Desso’s commercial director, said: “This historic building is a fantastic example of how sustainability can reach new levels in today’s office environments. It’s extremely important for us all to spread the word on the incredible, innovative developments that are taking place in sustainable building products and systems, and this award is a great way to raise awareness. Hopefully – through this inspiring location – people will realize that it’s not just achievable, but also practical and good common sense to choose sustainability when creating office environments, no matter how old the original building may be.”

About Desso
DESSO is a leading manufacturer of high quality carpet tiles and broadloom carpets and has been in operation for 80 years. It has factories in Europe, with its headquarters in Waalwijk, The Netherlands. Desso has built an enviable reputation as a reliable partner producing quality flooring for a range of applications. Its products can be found in offices and public buildings, schools and universities, retail outlets, hospitals, as well as domestic interiors. Clients include Allianz, Canon, EDF, HSBC, Porsche, Procter & Gamble, SNCF and many more.

Desso’s creative carpet design and service oriented approach means that it has become a market leader in creating solutions for the Hotel, Marine and Aviation (HMA) sectors. Desso’s HMA division works with companies such as Hilton, Intercontinental, Maritime, KLM, Virgin, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and Holland America Line.

As part of its ongoing corporate philosophy of safeguarding the environment, Desso has signed a partnership agreement with the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA), the first carpet manufacturer in the Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA) to adopt the EPEA’s Cradle to Cradle design. Marking a radical and ambitious decision, the company plans for all its carpets to be Cradle to Cradle certified by 2020. In the Cradle to Cradle ethos, products are made from components that are easy to disassemble in order to create new products in both the biological and technical cycles. www.desso.com
